as for credentials being sent in hashed/cleartext, i don't believe it's malicious in intent, only in execution. there's 2 ways to approach the client problem here.
1, whoever runs the backend that this downloader uses, has to at least acknowledge they have apache logs (sic -- i'm guessing 2.2.x, i don't have dig or nmap handy) and that its an issue.every client that logs in, is logged. without some level of trust or knowledge of who runs the servers, the benefit of this as a service is just plain risky.
it's not that hard to create a log parser that spits out the hash values each hour, sends the logins into a text list, and emails them off-site for another person to test, or reverse the hash, or have it reversed on the server itself.
it's an issue. paranoia is fun, but it's far too easy for someone with the skill to edit a URL packed into an executable to write up a log parser if they did any testing at all.
i mean, if, and i stress, if yorick is basically launching a patched client, which as noted is a liability for anonymity due to the fact it's likely just a URL replaced version of the official client, and as feature packed as the original...
it's an issue.
for mac users, a DMG patch of the zygor mac client would likely work the same way, except the person would have to unpack the resource fork/Contents and edit the files inside the mac app, then repack it. not trivial, but on a similar difficulty level to any windows app crack, or a mac app crack.
i.e. 20 minutes work and a tutorial or 15 (or 4) to prep.
2. everyone has some grievance here, it won't be solved quickly.
this is really only because yorick's thread has by effect, derailed the ZygorDDL thread, and not intent.
these things happen.
3. whoknowsit, please, you should open up a new thread when you feel comfortable with running the updates, or the DDL updater again.
preferably sooner.
it would solve some of the drama and spillover, not all of it. this isn't the right place for it, but, neither is the main thread.
4. as one of the few ZygorDDL donators, it's hard to feel anything but profoundly shocked to see the original (well, 2nd/3rd original) thread close, for what appears to be something petty and inconsistent.
i donated money so that other people could use the ZygorDDL guides. i would like to use them too, and that's the only sentiment i had when i put the money in.
(this really needs a separate thread, i know. i apologise in advance, i go where the people are)
5. for the ZygorDDL fans, perhaps there could be a compromise, a 2nd option, or automatic access method. perhaps, perhaps for donators. or if there's another option, that option.
however, simply because of the precedent and problems that money introduces into something casual, even something as simple as a dollar, it's obnoxious, but it may be an option that keeps some people happy.

it may be something to consider if people want a mac option, i.e. via file hosting links or some other anonymous service, and the general difficulty in hosting files and posting files for free, due to well, people being douches with free stuff.
i would love to see something like the way it was running before, but, i'm a fan. i think 98% of people are happy with the way you want to do things, and you'll always have someone that wants more, or better, or things their own way.
